Food blog world, meet Paddy!
Paddy is our 2 year old foster dog. What’s a foster dog, you ask? A puppy that needs a temporary home (due to shelter overcrowding or other factors) while waiting for his or her forever home.
I pledged to myself that as soon as I was on my own, I’d get mahhhself a dog. Obviously as a poor post-grad with a questionable future, that wasn’t the most responsible plan… so my roommates and I signed up to be foster parents with North East All Retriever Rescue, and Paddy is our first foster dog.
Paddy is an entirely different breed of dog…
Sometimes I come into the living room in the mornings to see him sitting like this:
When Paddy jumps, he sometimes does full 180 flips in the air. When Paddy plays with a squeaky toy, he imitates it by whining after every squeak. When Paddy sleeps in my bed, he full on spoons with me, resting his head in the crook of my arm and pressing his body flat against mine.
On our first snow day, we took Paddy to the park, where he immediately bounded over to a snowman some kids were building and ripped its arms out, ensuing a chase. On Christmas Eve, my roommate spent the night on the phone with animal poison control because Paddy ate an entire batch of brownies. On Christmas, Paddy unwrapped and ripped apart all his toys before we were finished opening gifts:
Paddy is one of those dogs that you feel can deeply communicate with. If you tell Paddy to go get his red ball, he will ignore all the other balls and bring the one you asked for back to you. If you then tell him to go get his rope toy, he’ll drop the red ball and go hunting for his tug-o-war rope. If he can’t find it, you can tell him it’s in the bedroom and he’ll go bounding into the other room for it.
When I came back from a 3-day vacation, Paddy came leaping into my arms, where he rested his head in the crook of my neck, as if he were saying, “please don’t ever leave me like that again.”
Today is a bittersweet day. Today Paddy found his forever home, and after 3 months with us, left to go live on a farm in Central Massachusetts. A great home for a great dog.
Of course, Paddy had to leave in typical Paddy style: after preparing him a real steak dinner, we ordered Indian takeout. When the takeout arrived, we left it on the table while we went to rent a movie… Paddy ate all of it.
So now I’m sad. No Paddy AND no Indian food.
Well, at least there’s something a foodie can do about one of those things…
I’ve recently been venturing into attempting Indian cooking. For me, this is a daunting task… Indian food is so flavorful and home cooking it never seems to yield the same results that come with good take-out.
But with a full spice rack and a little confidence, I was able to whip up this little dry curry that, while not being quite takeout quality, at least eased some of the pain of our lost Indian food.
Chhhheck it out:
Dry Potato and Chick Pea Curry
- 1/2 onion, minced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 potato, cut into small cubes
- 1 can of chick peas, drained
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 1 tablespoon mustard seed
- 1 tablespoon cumin seed
- 1.5 teaspoons turmeric
- 1.5 teaspoons garam masala
- 1 teaspoon majorham
- pinch of cayenne
- salt and pepper to taste
- siracha sauce (optional)
- Heat the olive oil in a deep pan. When hot, add the onions and cook until soft; about 3 minutes. Add the potato and cook, stirring occasionally until tender and easily pierced with a fork, about 20 minutes.
- Add the peas and a 1/4 cup of water. Stir in all the spices and allow the water to boil off.
- Add the chickpeas and mix until heated through. Top with salt and pepper and some siracha sauce if you like.
